As a software development agency, we have more choices than ever about how and where our products are put to use. Virtually every industry in the world now requires software to operate effectively.
Some are noble and worthy, others are corrupt and destructive.
Doctors and nurses need software to look after their patients. Aid organisations need it to operate in crisis zones. On the other hand, arms dealers need software to track their shipments of weapons.
Most developers we know (and certainly all the ones in our office) would rather have their code supporting medics than warlords.
But there’s one industry that every person on the planet should want to see working as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Low carbon technology, clean energy, renewables – these are pursuits that have the potential to save civilisation from collapsing. At this moment in history, we believe there is no more worthwhile challenge than halting and reversing climate breakdown.
Developing positivity
Amid the often frightening news about the climate, there is room for optimism. Energy from wind, solar and hydro is now cheaper than energy from coal in some places¹. Solar and wind are some of the fastest-growing energy sources globally, with prices dropping by almost 90% in the last decade².
There have been major breakthroughs in energy storage too. New battery technology allows us to store clean energy more efficiently, making it more reliable as a primary source. Meanwhile, electric vehicles are driving down transport emissions. And corporations are taking environmental commitments more seriously than ever – thanks in part to green policies becoming more and more profitable. In fact, businesses in the UK have recently committed to £24 billion of investment in clean energy³.
Our role in revolution
Underpinning all this technology? Software, of course.
Software to monitor energy consumption, software to control electric vehicles, software to operate wind and solar farms; from smart meters to the national grid, none of the extraordinary growth we’ve seen in renewable technology would be possible without the systems and applications that support it.
That makes it an exciting time for our industry.
Going beyond best practice
At DabApps, we’ve always done our best to work in an environmentally responsible way. We choose our suppliers carefully, reduce our energy consumption wherever possible, and train and educate our team on sustainability best practice.
But these measures have always felt like playing our part, rather than leading the way.
Now, however, we’re embarking on a new phase of growth and development that is much more powerful. Our ideas and products are supporting an energy revolution that we believe will have a profoundly positive effect on the future.
A once-in-a-generation opportunity
Our industry, perhaps more than any other, has an amazing opportunity to support the transition to clean energy and net zero targets. At DabApps, we intend to seize it.
We’ve already helped create the most advanced energy utility platform in the world. We’ve built a mobile app and in-home smart hub, helping people monitor energy flow around the home. And our software helps businesses work with indigenous communities to solve global issues in crop production.
We’re not proclaiming to save the planet. But we are doing everything we can to pour our expertise, our resources and our ideas into supporting the industries that will.
We can’t think of a better reason for software to exist.
- The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that renewables like solar and wind are now often cheaper than coal and other fossil fuels, especially in many regions of the world, including parts of Asia and Europe.
- The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has documented dramatic price drops in solar and wind energy over the past decade, with solar photovoltaic (PV) costs declining by around 89% since 2010.
